A Comprehensive Guide to the Civil Services Examination Syllabus

  1. Preliminary Examination

The Preliminary Examination is the first step in the Civil Services journey. It consists of two compulsory papers, both designed to assess a candidate's general awareness and aptitude.

Key Details:

  1. Papers:
    • Paper-I: General Studies (200 Marks)
    • Paper-II: Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) (200 Marks)
  2. Duration: Each paper is two hours long.
  3. Question Type: Both papers consist of objective-type (multiple-choice) questions.
  4. Important Notes:
    • Paper-II (CSAT) is a qualifying paper. Candidates must secure at least 33% marks to qualify.
    • The question papers are available in Hindi and English.

Pro Tip: Focus on Paper-I for merit and ensure consistent practice for Paper-II to meet the qualifying requirement.

  1. Main Examination

The Main Examination is written and consists of multiple papers. It evaluates a candidate’s academic knowledge and ability to present ideas clearly and coherently. The exam comprises Qualifying Papers and Papers to be Counted for Merit.

  1. Qualifying Papers:
  • Paper-A: One Indian Language (to be chosen from the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution) – 300 Marks
  • Paper-B: English – 300 Marks

Note: Both these papers are qualifying in nature.

  1. Papers to be Counted for Merit:
  • Paper-I: Essay – 250 Marks
  • Paper-II: General Studies I – 250 Marks
    • Topics: Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society
  • Paper-III: General Studies II – 250 Marks
    • Topics: Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, and International Relations
  • Paper-IV: General Studies III – 250 Marks
    • Topics: Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity, Environment, Security, and Disaster Management
  • Paper-V: General Studies IV – 250 Marks
    • Topics: Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude
  • Paper-VI: Optional Subject - Paper 1 – 250 Marks
  • Paper-VII: Optional Subject - Paper 2 – 250 Marks

Sub Total (Written Test): 1750 Marks

Optional Subjects

Candidates can select their optional subject from a wide range of disciplines, including but not limited to History, Geography, Public Administration, Literature, Political Science, and Sociology. Each optional subject has two papers (Paper-VI and Paper-VII).

  1. Personality Test

After clearing the Main Examination, candidates are called for the Personality Test, also known as the Interview. This test carries 275 Marks and assesses:

  • Communication skills
  • Analytical ability
  • Ethical understanding
  • Leadership qualities

Grand Total

The final tally combines marks from the Written Examination (1750 Marks) and the Personality Test (275 Marks), totaling 2025 Marks.
