UPSC - Prelims
Overview
The UPSC CSE Preliminary exam consists of two papers –
- Paper 1- General Studies -200 Marks
- Paper 2-Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT)-200 Marks
- The Prelims consists of two papers of 200 marks each.
- Both the question papers will be of the objective type (multiple choice questions).
- The duration of the exam is two hours.
- Paper-2 (CSAT) in the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination is a qualifying paper with minimum qualifying marks fixed at 33%.
- The question paper of Prelims will be bilingual. The question papers will be set in both Hindi and English. However, questions related to English Language Comprehension skills would be provided only in English.
- There is a negative marking of 1/3rd for every incorrect answer in both papers. The score obtained in the Prelims will not be added to the final score. UPSC CSE Prelims 2022 will be just for screening purposes.
The Civil services Exam Prelims examination is objective in nature and it consists of two papers.

- General Studies Syllabus
- Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT)Syllabus
- Current events of national and international importance
- History of India and Indian national movement
- Indian and World Geography- physical, social, economic geography of India and the world
- Indian Polity and governance – constitution, political system, panchayati raj, public policy, Rights issues, etc.
- Economic and social development – sustainable development, poverty, inclusion, demographics, social sector initiatives etc.
- General issues on environmental ecology, bio-diversity and climate change-that do not require subject specialization
- General science.
- Comprehension
- Interpersonal skills including communication skills
- Logical reasoning and analytical ability
- Decision making and problem solving
- General mental ability
- Data Interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. – Class X level)
- English Language Comprehension skills (Class X level).
- Questions relating to English Language Comprehension skills of Class X level. (will be tested through passages from English language only without providing Hindi translation) There are 80 questions carrying 200 marks. Each question carries 2.5 marks. There is a penalty of 33% marks or 0.83 marks for every wrong answer. Though decision making and problem solving section doesn’t have negative marking.
